Standardising the single and double letter cancellation test for South African military personnel

Whilst I was working at 1 Military Hospital, I had hoped that my love for assessment would rub off on some interns. So, I was very chuffed when my friend and colleague, Chevon Pillay Haarhoff asked me to co-supervise her dissertation on an assessment related topic.

This was a dream come true, as when I was doing my own research, I had always hoped that someday, someone else would APA reference my work in theirs.

Trevor Reynolds, Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist with special interest in Aeromedical Psychology, has alerted us of the importance of the Letter Cancellation Test in the assessment of pilots within the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). As such, Chevon decided to take on the tasks of developing a preliminary standardisation of the Single and Double Letter Cancellation Test for South African military personnel.

Chevon created a beautiful piece of work and following the completion of her study, together with co-supervisors Prof Rene van Eeden and Boshadi Semenya we wrote up the article for publication in the African Journal of Psychological Assessment (AJOPA). I fill with joy every time I use the norms she created in one of my assessments.

We also did a poster presentation of the findings at the International Neuropsychological Society’s 2017 Mid-Year Congress in Cape Town between 5 and 8 July 2017:
